Steven Willard Smith died peacefully in his home on March 8, 2024 in Woodstock at the age of 72.
Steve was born a triplet with sisters, Susan and Sharon, on November 9, 1952, in Elgin, Il. After graduating Cary Grove High School in 1970, he began working in the family business.
He married the high school sweetheart and love of his life, Mary Kathryn Reynolds, in November 1971. They made Woodstock the family homestead in 1976, where they would both spend the rest of their lives, raising their 3 children.
From an early age, Steve began driving for his father’s family trucking company, W. Smith Cartage in Cary. In 2020, after 98 years of operation, the company his grandfather started closed its doors.
Steve was a kind, generous, hardworking man. Family meant everything to him and it showed in every decision he made. The impact he had on his family and friends will be forever remembered.
Steve is survived by his children, Steven (Megan) Smith, Woodstock, Il; Bradley (Ashley) Smith Rapid City, S.D; Kristen (John) Cannon, Marengo, Il; grandchildren, Brady and Maddie Kay Cannon, Payton and Gracie Smith, and Myles Smith.
Surviving also are brothers, Tom, Jim (Betty) Smith, sisters Susan (Gary) Lindsley, Sharon Ormsby, Mariann (Greg) Werderitch, sister-in-law Gale Smith, and sister Patty (Bill) Downey.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Virgene Smith, brother Charlie Smith, parents-in-law, James (Mick) and Dorothy Reynolds, and brothers in law, Bill Reinwand, Dan Hoeft, and Richard Ormsby.
A private burial will be at Crystal Lake Union Cemetery alongside his wife.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 15th from 5:00-8:00pm at Joe’s Place, 19716 E. Grant Highway, Marengo, IL.
