Melanie Mary Hauff was born December 10, 1947, to Edwin and Cecilia (Stoltz) Hauff in Watertown, South Dakota.
After her 1966 graduation from high school, she received a degree in Music Education from the University of South Dakota in 1970. She moved to Chicago and was employed for many years at Xerox Corporation. From childhood, she displayed great creativity, as a gifted needle-and-craftswoman, artist, gardener, cook, and musician. She will be greatly missed by her large and loving circle of friends and family, including the American shapenote singing community to which she contributed so much—musical, artistic, and culinary.
She is survived by a sister, Judy Hauff, of Woodstock, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Janet Hauff Fuller of Fort Smith, AR, a brother, Edwin Hauff, of Waterloo, IA, a sister, Diana Hauff Zewig, of Brookings, SD, a brother, John Hauff of Watertown, SD, and by many loving nieces and nephews.
