John Yuen Obituary

John Yuen, 63, of Schaumburg, IL, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, with his loving family at his side. After being diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in August of 2025, John faced the next year with unwavering determination. He fully expected to beat the disease and fought incredibly hard to do so. He never missed an appointment, never complained, and did everything asked of him throughout his treatment. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained focused on getting better and on the life he planned to return to. In the end, a treatment-weakened immune system left him unable to overcome an infection, ending a fight he never intended to give up.

John was born on October 25, 1962, to the late Chak Ching and Lai Fung Yuen in Hong Kong, the youngest of six children. His family came to the United States with nothing more than a large wooden chest of belongings and the American Dream. He grew up in Chicago, IL, graduating from Lane Tech High School and then Loyola University. In February of 1989, John caught the eye of Karen Kyle with his flashy Jeep Grand Cherokee and winning personality. John and Karen were married on July 1, 1995, in Highland Park, IL, and went on to raise three children together in Schaumburg.

John worked as a Quality Assurance Manager for Unilever, where he built a career spanning more than 35 years. His dedication and strong work ethic remained steadfast even throughout his illness. Despite undergoing cancer treatments, John continued working until the Friday before his death—a reflection of the determination and perseverance that defined him throughout his life.

The only thing more important than his work was his beloved family. John worked hard to make sure his family had everything they needed and more than he had growing up. He encouraged his children to pursue education, learn a trade, and build secure, successful lives for themselves. He believed strongly in living wisely and responsibly and worked to instill those same values in his children. John was direct and honest, but also kind and compassionate, and his family knew they could always turn to him for sound advice. Above all, he put his family before himself and made sure those he loved were always cared for.

John was quick-witted with a great sense of humor and always seemed to know just when to use it. He was an avid baseball fan, especially of the Red Sox and Cubs, and rarely missed an opportunity to watch a game. His love of baseball also gave him special time with his oldest son, Kevin, whom he coached throughout his years in youth baseball.

John will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His wisdom, strength, humor, and devotion to those he loved will remain part of his legacy.

John is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Karen; beloved children, Kevin (Audrey), Jeremy (Emma), and AJ; siblings, Kit (Jack) Der, Debbi (Edward) Yeung, Calvin Yuen, William Yuen, and Linda (Ron) Wing; many nieces and nephews; and parents-in-law, Richard and Cheryl Kyle.

In following John’s wishes, the family celebrated his life privately. Saunders Funeral Home and Crematory of Woodstock, IL is honored to serve the Yuen family.

In lieu of flowers, cards and memorial gifts may be sent to Saunders Funeral Home, 107 W. Sumner St., Harvard, IL 60033, which will be forwarded to the family.  Any memorial gifts will be given to a charity of the families choosing.
